Position Summary

The Graveside Specialist works to support Henry Walser Funeral Home’s mission to be a team of caring and compassionate professionals who are committed to providing funeral services that help families and friends honour their departed loved ones in a manner that helps to facilitate the healing process. They do this by providing support to families in a time of need in a professional, sympathetic manner and following their wishes for the care of their loved one.

Funeral Home Responsibilities

  • confirm and organize the following:
  • Date of graveside service
  • Time of service
  • Cemetery chosen and map (if available) of the cemetery showing location of grave
  • order the grave opening using the information above
  • communicate this above information to the person in charge of this service in addition to
  • special circumstances about this family
  • contact information for the next of kin
  • link to the website (if there is one)
  • send pdf of map
  • HWFH will provide training prior to achieve a high level of success

Your Responsibilities

  • organize details communicated from the funeral home
  • Set up a time to talk with the family - via email or phone so the family can be prepared to talk
  • Share with the family a “standard” service program
  • Confirm if this is ok or needs to be revised
  • Review 5 steps, and make accommodations accordingly, as per family’s wishes
    • 1)  A statement of purpose
    • 2)  a short personal message about their loved one
    • 3)  Some words of encouragement
    • 4)  Allowing each person present to say a few words if they wish
    • 5)  We conclude the time together with an invitation for each person present to come forward and lay a hand on the urn as a way of releasing the loved one from our care into God's care.  We need permission to say these words because some families may not want these words to be said so we have to adjust
  • Ensure arrival is 15 minutes ahead of service time
  • Touch base with family before start of service to make sure no changes are necessary and review procedure
  • Communicate with cemetery staff once service is over
  • Send summary back to HWFH
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications, Skills, Attributes

Experience, Education, and Technical Skills

  • 3+ years of experience in a similar or related environment
  • Diploma or degree from a recognized college or university in a related discipline an asset
  • A valid Ontario G class license is required
  • Ability to follow clear directions and procedures and perform tasks in accordance with set procedures
  • Moderate problem-solving skills are required to effectively deal with problems that may be encountered when off-site doing working independently.  Will have to use judgement in those cases to determine best solution
  • A basic knowledge of standards and procedures in Funeral Service would be an asset, although no specialized knowledge or experience is required to enter the position
  • Moderate analytical reasoning is required to be able to adapt with any changes that arise
  • Ability to perform moderate level administrative duties to coordinate and schedule tasks as required
  • Basic computer skill is required
  • Strong presentation and communication skills

Working conditions and physical demands


  • Work is performed primarily at various cemeteries, where the incumbent would be exposed to extreme weather conditions (hot/cold temperatures) for significant periods of time.
  • Work is completed in an extended standing and walking position.
  • Governed by strict deadlines.


Physical Effort

  • Physical demands for the position are light to moderate depending on the day, especially when multiple services may fall on the same day.

Mental Effort

  • Incumbent is required to understand and follow very detailed directions and listening attentively crucial
  • Some mental strain/drain can result from regularly interacting with grieving families
