Position Title:      Ordained or Student United Church Minister

Position Profile: Part-time - Solo                Hours/week: 20

Position Summary:   Westmount has one Ordained Minister and one Licensed Lay Worship Leader (LLWL). The Minister, in consultation with, and support from our LLWL and relevant committees, has responsibility for worship and various aspects of the spiritual life and pastoral care of the congregation. The Minister is accountable to the church Council through the M & P Committee.

Autonomy in Decision-Making:   Our Minister is our spiritual leader. The Minister works closely with our LLWL and Council. Our congregation has strong lay leadership and works in a collaborative atmosphere. (Romans 12:5) However, the Minister is an integral part and uniting force. In addition, we have paid, part-time, administrative support. Worship services are planned by the Minister, in conjunction with the Music Coordinator and the Chair of Worship. The Minister is responsible for delivering Bible-based and Christ-centered teachings that encourage continuous growth in our faith-walk with God. Visitation and pastoral care is an area where the minister has autonomy. The Minister, in conjunction with a designated congregant, also has autonomy for the distribution of our benevolent funds.

Principal Areas of Responsibility and Associated Duties:

  • Worship – 50%
  • Discipleship – 15%
  • Pastoral Care – 15%
  • Leadership & Administration - 10%
  • Other – 10%

While this position description is comprehensive, the Minister is not expected to undertake sole responsibility in any area. The Minister is responsible for overseeing activities including: the planning, organizing, coordinating, and implementing of various programs. However, this doesn’t mean that the Minister personally conducts all programs but works with support staff, our LLWL and many dedicated volunteers.

Worship:

  • Plan and lead worship that is consistent with the teachings of Jesus Christ
  • Preaches on most Sundays, along with our LLWL and pulpit supply, excluding four weeks’ vacation and study leave
  • Administer the Sacraments of Holy Communion and Baptism

Discipleship: Support congregational members to understand their role in living and sharing the free gift that Jesus Christ has made possible for all believers. Develop ongoing training for congregational members through:

  • Bible studies
  • Prayer group
  • Confirmation classes

Pastoral/Spiritual Care:   Provide formal and informal spiritual care to the congregation. The Minister will provide home, hospital and nursing home visits; funerals and weddings (as requested). The Minister also encourages and supports spiritual and social groups within the church.

Justice and Outreach:     The Minister supports and encourages the work of the congregation in sharing Jesus Christ with others thru bringing local people/families to church functions to enjoy fellowship, food, games, activities, movies etc. The Minister also encourages and supports the Mission and Outreach Committee in social justice and outreach locally, provincially and globally. The Minister is knowledgeable of, encourages and occasionally participates in reaching out to our community and beyond through Social media (web site and Facebook).

Leadership:   Minister will support the development of Christian leadership and involvement within our church. Minister will identify, develop, train, encourage and support everyone’s individual gifts to share the love of Jesus Christ through various ministries. Minister also encourages members to become involved in leading others to grow in their faith and become involved in decision making within the church.

Ministry Partnerships:   Minister will maintain contact with Shining Waters Region to support the life and work of the wider church.

Personal Spirituality and Self Care:   Personal spirituality, self-care and personal development are a major priority for the M & P Committee concerning all our staff. Westmount provides a financial budget to allow the Minister to continue to grow spiritually and for self-care through courses, retreats, study leave, books, Christian Yoga etc. and there is an expectation that the Minister will avail themselves of those opportunities. The Minister is welcomed to participate in church social activities and gatherings.

Stewardship:     We have no specific activities but we are blessed with an awesome volunteer base that eagerly contributes their time, money and talents to support our church members to share Jesus Christ with others. As needed, the Minister would encourage and appeal to the Congregation for funds as needed for special projects.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent knowledge, understanding, belief and passion for the Bible as the Holy Word of God
  • Strong worship leader
  • Solid interpersonal and communication skills with people of all age-groups
  • Awareness and familiarity with current technologies
  • Comfort level with Live Streaming
  • Mediator

Other “Preferred” Assets:

  • Valid “G” driver’s license
  • Own a reliable vehicle
